How many sheep do you need to be profitable? ›

According to Paul Rodgers, director of producer services for the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI), the conventional approach of adding 20 to 100 ewes to a farm operation can be profitable. Other approaches require careful marketing and would be more difficult and risky.

As general guidelines, you will need to keep a minimum of 300 ewes under an accelerated lambing program, and 600 to 1000 ewes under once a year lambing programs to expect to make a full time living from sheep farming.

Cattle are among the most profitable livestock for small farms because they are easy to raise and offer multiple income opportunities. While large-scale cattle farms — which can create sustainability concerns — raise cows primarily for meat, small farms can capitalize on various products to increase their bottom line.

If you have good quality pasture and live in a warm climate you could raise a small flock of sheep to provide your family food from without purchasing much from outside sources. For a large family I suggest starting with 2 Ewes and a Ram, and eventually growing to 4 Ewes.

The average lifespan of a sheep is 10-12 years, although the age at which they cease to be 'commercially productive' is around 5 years earlier, hence most domestic sheep are killed at around half of their potential lifespan.

After lambing, unless lambing late, into May, it is unlikely that grass alone will be able to provide enough nutrients for a ewe with twin or more lambs. The sheep keeper can either supplement the ewe's diet or the lamb's or both.

Some common garden plants, such as azaleas, chrysanthemums, acorns, buttercups, daffodils, holly and elderberry are poisonous for sheep to eat. Therefore, ensure they do not have access to garden areas, and when gardening ensure you don't throw garden waste into your paddocks, and that your paddocks are well fenced.

Sheep do frequent, short naps. They don't sleep for 8 hours in the night. During the lambing season we keep our sheep close to our house. It is best to keep them in flocks. It takes about five sheep for sheep to display their natural flocking instinct. In the minimum, pet sheep should be kept in pairs. They can also be kept with other livestock, especially goats, but their preference is their own kind.
