next Sentinel f( The Arnold Commercial Club held a called meeting at the Rialto Theatre Tuesday afternoon with a good attendance that included representatives from most of the business houses in town The meeting was held chiefly for the purpose of discussing various matters which relate to the Christmas season There were some things in connection with the new street decorations that had to be settled and also with the method of financing the usual Christmas treat and free show The street decorations may be in place in time for use the coming Saturday evening and if not then they vill be turned on Wednesday evening of next week There will be a beautifully lighted tree on each street light standard in the entire business district excepting in a very few cases where the light poles are too far from any business house to permit running the necessary wires The usual free picture show and free treats will be given on the afternoon of Tuesday December 24 Manager Brown of the Rialto Theatre stated he could supply a program including a good western feature a comedy and a news reel and there will of course be plenty of sacks of candy and nuts for all the kiddies who are here There was considerable discussion concerning the proposed poultry show that had been tentatively planned for tote January or early February The business people of Arnold are anxious to hold this show if folks in the country want it to give ribbons and perhaps a relatively small cash prize for each winner and in addition to have all the business houses that cared to do so give merchandise or cash prizes for any class of exhibits they might choose5 A poultry show not only furnishes very well worth-while entertainment for those who come to look at the exhibits but it has lots of value for the exhibitors in that they can compare their birds with others on exhibition buy and sell if they choose and advertise their flocks It is hoped that poultry producers in the country will make it a point to tell the people in the stores where they trade or other businessmen whether they want a poultry show held and if they do want it Arnold will be glad to put it on Most of- the sentiment seemed to be in favor of confining the first show to poultry but a stock show can also be held and probably will be if the farmers want it and will agree to bring in some exhibits plan has been Milldale Improvement Co To Sell Its Holdings At Auction December 19 The Arnold village board- spent a large part of the time at its regular December meeting Monday evening discussing various aspects of a little flurry of real estate operations in which the village appears about to engage not however on a very large scale When some parts of the town were laid out no provision was made for a sidewalk along property lines it apparently having been assumed at that time that a narrow street would answer all probable requirements One of these locations is on the west side of properties owned by Frank Koubek and Ralph Bryan in the northeast part of town These two men each own a strip of ground 14 feet wide and 200 feet long which in nearly all other parts of town belongs to the village and is used for sidewalk space For some time the village has been endeavoring to arrange for sidewalks there Ralph Bryan now at home on a vacation was present at Monday session of the board and offered to give the village his 14x200-foot piece of ground if the village would put in the required sidewalk After considerable discussion the-matter was referred to the street committee Joe Coufal and Skinner to settle as they see fit This was on the' basis that not more than $75 would be involved committees having authority without action of the entire board up to that amount A second real estate proposition involves one lot located just south of the ground upon which the village hall and water and fire station is located This lot has been owned for a considerable term of years by Jones and his business associates and aside from being occupied by the barn in which the late Dr Robison kept his teams in the old days has been used more by the village for storing road machinery etc than for any other purpose Mr Jones made an offer to sell the lot which the board members considered reasonable and since they thought the village would be in more or less need of the ground permanently it was voted to authorize Mayor Holt to enter into a contract to buy it with the usual conditions as to merchantable title being given Some miscreants at time turned on a water shutoff at the home of Mrs Anna Peoples which resulted in an outside hydrant freezing and several thousand gallons of water leaking out before the break was discovered Water Commissioner George Lantz was authorized to make a fair settlement with Mrs Peoples for the extra water that went through the meter in this case Village Clerk Vernon Smith presented a letter from the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission stating that another application had been made for a license to conduct a liquor store in Arnold that is for sale of liquor in packages within the corporate limits of the town While no motion was passed which appears in the official minutes it was announced that the board intended to leave the matter on the same basis it has been since last summer when a resolution was passed to the effect that the board opposed having a liquor license issued to anybody here The monthly bills somewhat smaller in number and amount than usual were audited and allowed NEWS REVIEW OF CUSTER COUNTY (By Staff Correspondent) Important Happenings Of
