John Deere announced Friday it will lay off approximately 610 workers between three of its plants in Illinois and Iowa, Fox News reported.

The agricultural machinery giant is set to layoff hundreds of workers due to declining demand for its products, with all layoffs taking effect August 30, according to the outlet. The move reportedly affects 280 workers at the East Moline, Illinois plant, 230 at the Davenport, Iowa factory and about 100 at the Dubuque, Iowa facility.

The company is offering affected workers a Supplemental Unemployment Benefit, covering about 95% of their weekly net pay for up to 26 weeks, based on length of service, the outlet reported. In addition, they will reportedly receive profit-sharing options and health benefits. The layoff was originally announced May 31 through a company-wide email sent to employees, a Reddit user claimed.

Huge swaths of farm land being purchased and used for solar power sure ain't helping.

This one struck me a bit. Surprising, yet not unexpected given the current business and regulatory environment.

I have 2 thoughts. Thought #1 do you blame them, have you noticed the quality of the American worker lately or the general environment of doing business here at scale?
2. Are there enough Mexicans left in Mexico to actually staff it lol. Another company ditches American workers (38)

I was just reading that on Fox news and have to say, not surprised at all.

""We get wind of more layoffs daily, it seems, and it's causing uncertainty all over," said the worker, who wished to remain anonymous. "The only reason for Deere to do this is greed.""

Well, just keep on being union, because you just unioned yourself out of a job demanding stupid wages and benefits packages because "I can't live on $40/hr." If the labor is going to be the most expensive part of production, of course the company is going to find cheaper, less whiny cry babi...errr...workers. John Deere has been around since 1837 for a reason and one of those is because management and executives have know how to keep it afloat for almost 2 centuries. 100% don't blame them for moving labor costs to a different country with cheaper wages. I'm not being anti-American jobs, but damn, when American workers are demanding more and more income for less production, I'd hire someone cheaper too.

Quick google search says 67% of their sales are to the US market. Might not have been a wise decision

I ordered a new John Deer tractor last November, it did not come in until May, 6 months waiting list for a tractor, crazy they would have to lay off workers, seems like they need to hire more.
